Star Micronics Receipt Printing, Cash Handling and Weighing

Receipt and kitchen printers, cash drawers, legal-for-trade scales, label printers and barcode scanners for retail, foodservice and hospitality. Star is the default choice for tablet and cloud POS, largely because of CloudPRNT.

CloudPRNT PrintingKitchen Impact PrintingNTEP Legal for TradeLinerless LabellingTablet POS Stands
CloudPRNT Star's cloud printing protocol lets a web or mobile application send a receipt without a local driver, which is why Star dominates tablet and cloud POS.
Legal for Trade Selling by weight in the US requires an NTEP-certified scale. The mG-S8200 and mG-T series carry it; precision models do not.
Linerless Linerless labels remove the liner entirely, roughly doubling labels per roll and eliminating the backing waste at the counter.

Star Micronics Hardware Questions

Choosing a printer, connecting a cash drawer, linerless labelling, legal-for-trade scales and matching media to the machine.

Which Star Micronics receipt printer should I choose?

The TSP143IV is the current volume seller and suits most retail and hospitality counters, with USB-C, Ethernet and CloudPRNT options. The mC-Print3 is the compact connected choice for tablet POS, adding a peripheral hub so a scanner and drawer can hang off the printer.

For kitchens, choose impact rather than thermal. Heat, steam and grease destroy thermal print, which is why the SP742 exists.

Browse Star receipt printers or kitchen impact printers.

Which Star printer should I use with an iPad?

The mPOP is the purpose-built answer: printer and cash drawer in one unit, designed around tablet checkout, and it connects to an iPad directly. For a separate printer, the TSP143IV and the mC-Print range are the usual choices, both available in builds that connect to iOS.

Check two things before ordering. First the interface, since Bluetooth, USB-C, Lightning and Ethernet are separate part numbers fixed at manufacture. Second whether your POS app expects a direct connection or CloudPRNT, because that decides whether the printer needs to be on the same network as the tablet at all.

The mC-Print range adds a peripheral hub, which lets a scanner and drawer connect through the printer rather than fighting over the iPad's single port. On a tablet counter that is usually the deciding feature.

Browse Star receipt printers and tablet stands.

What is CloudPRNT and do I need it?

CloudPRNT is Star's cloud printing protocol. Instead of a driver on a local computer, the printer polls a web service for jobs, which means a browser-based or mobile application can print a receipt with nothing installed on site.

It matters if your POS is cloud-based, if orders arrive from online channels, or if you need to print to a site you do not physically control. If you run a traditional local POS with a driver, you do not need it.

This is a large part of why Star is the default printer for tablet and cloud POS platforms.

Why use an impact printer in the kitchen?

Thermal print is created by heat, so a thermal ticket in a hot kitchen darkens, curls and becomes unreadable. Grease and steam make it worse.

Impact printers strike an ink ribbon onto plain paper, which is unaffected by heat. They also print in two colours, so modifiers and allergen notes can be highlighted in red, and they handle multi-part carbonless paper where a duplicate copy is needed.

Browse Star kitchen printers and matching ribbons.

Which Star printers can print linerless labels?

Two families. The mC-Label2 and mC-Label3 are purpose-built label printers and take permanent linerless stock, the TRP series. The TSP143IV SK and TSP654II SK are receipt printers with the linerless option, and take the removable TRK series.

That distinction matters more than it looks. The SK receipt printers use repositionable or clean-peel adhesive, which suits order tickets and food labels that get removed later. The mC-Label range takes permanent adhesive for labels that stay on the product.

The SK suffix is not an add-on. A standard TSP143IV cannot print linerless, because linerless needs a specific platen and cutter to stop the adhesive fouling the mechanism.

Browse Star label printers and matching linerless media.

What are linerless labels and why use them?

Linerless labels have no backing paper. The adhesive is on the reverse of the label stock itself, and a special platen and cutter handle it.

Two consequences follow. You get roughly twice as many labels on a roll of the same diameter, and there is no liner waste to collect at the counter, which matters in foodservice where labels are applied constantly.

Adhesive type is the choice to get right: diamond adhesive repositions, full adhesive holds firmly and peels clean. Browse Star labels.

What is the difference between the CD3, CD4 and CD5 cash drawers?

They are three duty levels rather than three feature sets. The CD3 Value Series is the entry drawer for standard retail and hospitality counters where cash is a minority of transactions. The CD4 Choice Series is the mid range and offers the widest choice of sizes, till layouts and finishes. The CD5 Max Series is built for high cycle counts, cash-intensive sites and multi-shift operation.

The practical difference is the mechanism. A drawer opening a handful of times an hour and one opening constantly through a double shift wear very differently, and the Max Series is specified for the latter.

Size is a separate decision from series. Choose the till layout by the number of note and coin denominations you handle, not by how much space the counter has.

Browse Star cash drawers.

How do I connect a cash drawer to an iPad or tablet?

You do not connect it to the tablet. The drawer connects to the receipt printer, and the printer opens it. A tablet has no port that can drive a 24V drawer pulse, which is the single most common misunderstanding on tablet POS builds.

The cable runs from the DK port on the back of the printer, which looks like a telephone socket, to the matching port on the drawer. Your POS app sends the open command to the printer, and the printer fires the pulse.

Two consequences follow. If you buy a printer without a DK port you cannot add a drawer later, and if you want a drawer with no printer at all you need a drawer with its own USB or Bluetooth interface, which is a different product. The mPOP sidesteps all of this by combining both in one unit.

Browse cash drawer cables or send us your printer model and we will confirm the right one.

How do I know which cash drawer fits my printer?

Most POS drawers are printer-driven: the receipt printer sends the pulse that opens the drawer through an RJ-type cable. So the pairing is printer to drawer, not till to computer.

Check the cable and the voltage. A 24V drawer on a 12V pulse will not open reliably, and cables are not universal despite looking identical.

Star offers Value, Choice and Max Series depending on how much cash passes through. Browse Star cash drawers.

Do I need an NTEP-certified scale?

If you sell by weight in the United States, yes. NTEP certification, also called legal for trade, is a regulatory requirement for any scale used to determine the price a customer pays.

The mG-S8200 and the mG-T series carry it. Precision scales such as the mG-S322 do not, and are intended for portion control, back-of-house and non-transactional weighing.

Getting this wrong is a compliance problem rather than an inconvenience. Browse Star scales.

Which paper fits my Star printer?

Three measurements have to match: width, roll diameter and core. An 80 mm printer will not take 58 mm paper, and a roll with too large a diameter will not close the cover.

Star Blue Eco grades are the bisphenol-free, Prop 65-compliant option, which matters if you have a policy on thermal paper chemistry or sell in California.
