Which SATO printer should I choose?

Start with duty. The CL4NX Plus and CL6NX Plus are industrial units built for continuous output through a shift. The CT4-LX, FX3-LX, WS4 and WS2 are desktop printers for batch work at a bench. The PW and PV ranges are mobile, for printing where the work happens.

Then choose print width. Most applications are served by 4 inches, but the SG112-ex reaches 10.5 inches for wide-format compliance and pallet labels.

Why do SATO part numbers matter so much?

Because the CL range is configured at manufacture rather than adapted afterwards. Resolution, WLAN, real-time clock, dispenser, rewinder and cutter are all fixed when the printer is built.

Two printers both called CL4NX Plus can differ substantially. WWCLP1001 and WWCLP1201-WAR are the same family and very different machines.

What resolution do I need?

203 dpi handles standard barcodes and shipping labels, and is the right choice for most work. 305 dpi suits smaller text and denser codes. 609 dpi, available on the CL4NX Plus, is for very small 2D codes and fine detail such as electronics and laboratory marking.

Higher resolution is not automatically better. It prints more slowly, and the printhead costs more to replace, so specify it only where the label genuinely needs it.

What is a dispenser and rewinder, and do I need one?

A dispenser peels each label from its liner as it prints, so the operator takes a ready-to-apply label rather than peeling it by hand. A rewinder collects the spent liner, which keeps the work area clear.

Together they matter in any application where someone applies labels continuously, because peeling by hand is the slow step.

Both are specified at order on the CL range and cannot be retrofitted, so decide before purchase.

Which ribbon goes with which label?

Wax pairs with paper. Wax/resin suits coated paper and light synthetic use. Resin is required for polyester and polypropylene.

Getting this wrong is the most common thermal transfer mistake. A wax ribbon on a polyester label prints perfectly and then rubs away under a fingernail, because wax cannot bond to a synthetic surface.

How often do printheads need replacing?

The printhead is a wear part rather than a fault. Every label that passes under it causes a small amount of abrasion, so on an industrial printer running at full duty it is a running cost alongside labels and ribbon.

Poor quality media, running darkness higher than necessary and mismatched ribbons all shorten its life. Cleaning the head regularly extends it considerably.
