What hardware does an e-citation programme need?

Can any barcode scanner read a driver licence?

No, and this is the most common ordering mistake in e-citation projects. Licences carry a PDF417 barcode on the reverse, and reading it is only half the job. Parsing that data into name, address, date of birth and licence number requires firmware built for it.

Zebra sells these as DL variants, such as the DS9308-DL, and Honeywell as EasyDL builds. They are separate part numbers, not a configuration option, and a standard 2D scanner cannot be upgraded later.

Which printer suits roadside citation printing?

A mobile thermal printer worn on a belt or mounted in the vehicle. The decisive factors are one-handed media loading, roll capacity that covers a full shift, and a temperature range that tolerates being left in the vehicle overnight.

Full-page mobile printers suit programmes that issue longer documents; receipt-width units suit shorter citations and are lighter to carry.

Will the citation still be readable months later?

If the printed copy is the evidential record and may be produced in court months later, that is a specification decision rather than a media cost. Discuss retention requirements before choosing print method.
