Zebra Wearable Computer Questions

Choosing between the WT6400 and WT5400, pairing ring scanners, and lasting a full shift.

WT6400 or WT5400 — which wearable do I need?

The WT6400 is the rugged flagship, built for warehouse, distribution and manufacturing, and freezer capable with the right battery. The WT5400 is lighter and lower profile, aimed at retail fulfilment and lighter warehouse work.

Both share a 4.7-inch display, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. The difference is how hard the environment is and how much weight the operator carries all shift.

The WS50 is the third option, combining computer and scanner in one very small unit for the lightest duty.

Do I need a ring scanner as well?

Usually yes. A wearable computer displays the task; a ring scanner worn on the finger captures the barcode. Together they keep both hands free, which is the entire point of going wearable.

The WT6400 and WT5400 pair with Zebra RS2100, RS5100 and RS6100 Bluetooth ring scanners. The exception is the WS50, which has an integrated scanner and needs no ring.

See Zebra ring scanners.

When is a wearable better than a handheld?

When the operator handles product with both hands. A handheld has to be put down to lift a carton and picked up again to scan the next one, and across a shift of dense picking those seconds add up substantially.

For occasional scanning, a handheld remains cheaper and simpler. Wearables earn their cost in high-volume, repetitive picking.

Compare Zebra mobile computers if the work is more varied.

Will a wearable last a full shift?

Both current wearables offer standard and extended batteries. The WT5400 uses a 3,500 mAh standard or 5,000 mAh extended pack.

Plan for the extended battery if the screen stays on continuously or the device works in cold storage, where capacity drops. Hot-swappable designs let a flat unit be recharged without taking the operator off the floor.
