Citizen Industrial Label Printer Questions

Choosing between the CL-S700 generations, and knowing when industrial is the right spend.

Which Citizen industrial label printer should I choose?

The CL-S700 series is the core of the range. The CL-S700III and CL-S703III are the current generation and handle both direct thermal and thermal transfer, so one machine covers short-life and long-life labels without a second printer on the bench.

The earlier CL-S700 and CL-S700 Type II are still stocked, usually in direct thermal with Ethernet, and remain a sound choice where the workflow is settled and you do not need thermal transfer.

Do I actually need an industrial printer?

Probably not, if the printer is idle between orders. A desktop CL-S521II or CL-S531II handles a surprising amount of work and costs considerably less.

Industrial earns its price in three situations: the printer runs continuously through a shift, it sits somewhere with dust, heat or vibration, or downtime stops the line. In those cases the heavier construction and larger media capacity pay for themselves in fewer stoppages.

If you are between the two, the CL-S500 and CL-S600 desktop models are built to industrial standards in a smaller shell and are often the right middle step. Compare the desktop range.

What is the difference between the CL-S700 and the CL-S700III?

The III is the current generation of the same platform. The practical gains are in media handling, usability at the front panel and connectivity, rather than a change in what the printer fundamentally does.

Both remain in the range. If you are adding to an estate that already runs CL-S700 units, matching the existing model keeps spares, media and staff training consistent, which is often worth more than the newer feature set. If it is a fresh install, start with the III.

Will it take large media rolls?

Larger roll capacity is one of the main reasons to buy industrial. A bigger roll means fewer changes per shift, which matters more than it sounds when a media change stops a picking line.

Exact maximum roll and core diameters vary across the CL-S700 generations, so confirm against the model you are ordering rather than assuming they match. Send us the media you run and we will check it against the printer.

Can it run continuously through a shift?

Yes. That is the distinction between this range and a desktop unit. Industrial models are built for sustained output rather than bursts, with the metal construction and media capacity to match.

The parts that wear are the printhead and the platen roller, and both are consumables on a heavily used machine rather than faults. Budget for printhead replacement as a running cost on a printer at full duty, in the same way you budget for labels.

Which interface do I need?

Ethernet is the usual answer on an industrial site, and most of the CL-S700 units stocked here ship with it. It lets several stations print to the same machine and keeps the printer reachable for monitoring.

USB and serial are available depending on configuration. As with the rest of the Citizen range, the interface is fixed at manufacture, so specify it at order time. Tell us the environment and we will confirm the exact part number.

Hardware Selection Support

Not sure which model is right?

Send us what you are trying to do and we will come back with a specific recommendation rather than a catalogue. If you are replacing equipment, a model number or a photo of the existing setup is usually enough to work from.

  • Solutions experts on staff to answer your hardware questions
  • 30 day return policy, excluding consumables
  • In-stock items ship same day when ordered by 4:00pm Eastern
  • Volume and multi-location pricing reviewed on request
