Zebra ZD421 Direct Thermal Desktop Label Printer
A dependable 4-inch direct thermal printer for shipping, inventory, retail, healthcare and general barcode labeling. The Zebra ZD421 Direct Thermal prints on heat-sensitive media without a ribbon, helping simplify daily operation and reduce consumable changes. Its compact desktop footprint, intuitive controls and flexible connectivity make it a strong choice for short-to-medium-life labels used in fast-moving business workflows.
Product Description
The Zebra ZD421 Direct Thermal is the ribbon-free version of Zebra's advanced 4-inch ZD421 desktop printer. It creates images by applying heat directly to chemically treated direct thermal labels, tags, receipts or wristband media. Because no ribbon is required, operators have fewer supplies to load and manage, making the printer especially practical for shipping stations, retail counters, pharmacies, laboratories, offices and other applications where labels are used within a defined period.
Available in 203 dpi and 300 dpi configurations, the ZD421 Direct Thermal can be selected for either standard barcode output or more detailed labels. The 203 dpi model is ideal for common 4 x 6 shipping labels, carton labels and inventory identification. The 300 dpi model provides greater definition for small text, compact barcodes, detailed graphics and smaller label formats. USB and USB Host are standard, while Ethernet, serial, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are available depending on the selected factory configuration or installed upgrade module.
Direct thermal media is best suited to applications where labels do not require years of outdoor, chemical or heat resistance. For long-term asset labels, product identification or harsh-environment labeling, consider the Zebra ZD421 Thermal Transfer model.

Compatible Accessories and Upgrade Options
| Accessory / Option | Purpose | Selection Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet Connectivity Module | Adds wired Ethernet to compatible modular-slot configurations. | Useful for shared printers, centralized management and fixed network workstations. |
| Serial Connectivity Module | Adds serial connectivity for legacy hosts and specialized equipment. | Confirm connector and communication settings before ordering. |
| Wi-Fi / Bluetooth Wireless Module | Adds wireless network and Bluetooth connectivity to compatible configurations. | Wireless standards and regional certifications vary by module and printer revision. |
| Label Dispenser / Peeler | Separates each printed label from the liner and presents it for immediate application. | Best for repetitive labeling where operators apply one label at a time. |
| Cutter | Cuts compatible continuous media, tags or labels after printing. | Confirm media material and thickness are approved for cutter use. |
| Battery Base and Battery | Supports cart-based and mobile desktop printing away from a fixed outlet. | Useful for healthcare carts, warehouse stations and mobile labeling work areas. |
| Replacement Printhead | Restores print quality when the original printhead reaches the end of its service life. | The replacement must match the printer's 203 dpi or 300 dpi resolution. |
| Replacement Platen Roller | Replaces a worn drive roller that can contribute to feeding or print-quality problems. | Match the part to the exact ZD421 Direct Thermal chassis and print resolution. |

Labels and Consumables
| Consumable Type | Recommended Use | Selection Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 4 x 6 Direct Thermal Shipping Labels | Carrier, fulfillment, return and carton labels. | Confirm roll diameter, core size, perforation, adhesive and gap sensing requirements. |
| Zebra Z-Perform Direct Thermal Paper Labels | Shipping, receiving, inventory, shelf and general barcode labels. | Economical choice for indoor applications with short-to-medium label life. |
| Zebra Z-Select Direct Thermal Paper Labels | Applications needing smoother stock and improved print quality. | Useful for sharper text, smaller barcodes and more polished presentation. |
| Top-Coated Direct Thermal Labels | Labels exposed to moderate moisture, handling, oils or environmental contact. | Top coating improves resistance, but direct thermal media should still be qualified for actual exposure. |
| Removable-Adhesive Labels | Shelf, tote, temporary identification and promotional labeling. | Test adhesion and removability on the actual application surface. |
| Freezer and Cold-Temperature Labels | Food storage, laboratory, pharmacy and refrigerated inventory applications. | Select an adhesive designed for the application temperature and the temperature at which the label is applied. |
| Direct Thermal Wristbands | Patient, visitor, event and admission identification. | Confirm wristband cartridge or media compatibility, print width and durability requirements. |
| Continuous Direct Thermal Media | Receipts, variable-length labels, tickets and custom formats. | A cutter may be recommended depending on the workflow and media construction. |
| Cleaning Pens and Approved Swabs | Routine printhead and media-path maintenance. | Regular cleaning helps preserve print quality, reduce adhesive buildup and extend printhead life. |
Direct thermal media can darken when exposed to heat, sunlight, friction, plasticizers or certain chemicals. Select the face stock and adhesive according to the required label life, storage conditions, surface and operating environment.
