Guide at a Glance

Build the Device Specification Before Choosing the Model

A Zebra mobile computer should be selected around the work being performed, not simply by screen size or price. Use the guide sections below to create a repeatable approved-hardware standard.

Start With the Workflow

Six Questions That Narrow the Zebra Portfolio

Answer these questions before comparing part numbers. They determine the form factor, radio, scan engine, ruggedness and accessory package.

01

Where will the device be used?

Retail floor, warehouse aisle, freezer, vehicle, hospital, manufacturing cell or outdoor field route.

02

What must workers scan?

Standard labels, tiny dense codes, damaged symbols, distant rack labels, direct part marks or RFID tags.

03

How will users enter data?

Touchscreen apps, physical keypad entry, pistol-grip scanning, wearable workflows or a larger tablet interface.

04

Does the device need cellular?

Wi-Fi-only devices fit controlled facilities. Cellular models support delivery, field service and multi-site mobility.

05

How rugged must it be?

Match drops, tumbles, dust, water, temperature, freezer use, disinfectants and non-incendive requirements.

06

What completes the deployment?

Batteries, cradles, vehicle docks, trigger handles, ring scanners, RFID sleds, printers and device-management tools.

Connectivity

Wi-Fi-Only or Cellular?

Choose Wi-Fi-Only When

  • Devices remain inside stores, warehouses, hospitals or plants
  • Enterprise Wi-Fi coverage is reliable across the workflow
  • Lower hardware and carrier costs are priorities
  • Workers use shared-device pools at controlled locations
  • Examples include TC22, TC53e, TC73, MC3400 and ET40

Choose Cellular When

  • Workers leave the facility or move between customer locations
  • Routes, delivery, inspections or field service require continuous data
  • Private 5G, CBRS or carrier networks are part of the deployment
  • The device may be used in vehicles, yards or outdoor work areas
  • Examples include TC27, TC58e, TC78, MC3450 and ET45
Common Zebra naming pairs often use the lower-numbered model for Wi-Fi and the higher-numbered model for cellular, but always verify the exact SKU and region.
Barcode and RFID Capture

Choose the Scan Engine Around the Label and Distance

The right device family can still fail if the scan engine does not match the barcode size, condition and working distance.

Standard-Range 1D/2D

Best for labels held in the hand or scanned at normal working distance. Common in retail, healthcare, receiving and inventory.

Advanced-Range

Supports a broader near-to-far working range for mixed workflows without moving to a full pistol-grip device.

Extended-Range IntelliFocus

Designed for warehouse racks, pallets and long-distance scanning while retaining near-field performance.

Integrated RFID

Use TC53e-RFID or TC501 configurations when short-range UHF RFID should be built into the handheld.

RFID Sleds

Pair compatible handhelds with RFD40 or RFD90 sleds when longer-range RFID reading and higher tag throughput are required.

Camera vs Scan Engine

A camera can capture occasional codes; a dedicated enterprise scan engine is faster, more ergonomic and more reliable for repeated work.

Input and Ergonomics

Touchscreen, Keypad or Wearable?

Touchscreen Devices

Best for modern visual applications, signatures, photos, maps, customer interaction and mixed workflows. Add a trigger handle when scanning volume increases.

  • TC2, TC5 and TC7 families
  • Modern Android user interfaces
  • Large-screen data and multimedia apps
  • Strong fit for retail, field and healthcare

Keypad and Wearable Devices

Physical keypads improve repetitive data entry and glove use. Wearables reduce handling when both hands must remain available.

  • MC34 and MC94 keypad families
  • Straight-shooter and pistol-grip options
  • WT5400, WT6400 and WS50 wearables
  • Strong fit for warehouses and manufacturing
Ruggedness and Environment

Match the Device to the Physical Operating Conditions

Drops and IP ratings are only part of ruggedness. Temperature, condensation, disinfectants, gloves, vehicle vibration and specialty certifications also matter.

Accessories and Power

The Accessory Plan Is Part of the Device Specification

A mobile-computer rollout is incomplete until charging, carrying, vehicle, scanning and printing accessories are standardized.

Batteries

Standard, extended and BLE-enabled batteries should be planned around shift length, cold storage and hot-swap needs.

Charging Cradles

Single-slot, multi-slot and battery-only chargers determine how shared devices are staged and returned to service.

Pistol Grips & Trigger Handles

Add scan-intensive ergonomics to compatible touchscreen handhelds when workers scan continuously.

Wearable Scanners

Pair WT5400 or WT6400 with RS5100 or RS6100 ring scanners for hands-free barcode capture.

Vehicle Docks & Mounts

Rugged tablets and VC8300 deployments require secure mounting, power conditioning and cable planning.

RFID Sleds

RFD40 and RFD90 sleds extend compatible Zebra handhelds into mobile UHF RFID readers.

Mobile Printers

ZQ500 and ZQ600 Series printers support labels and receipts at the point of activity.

Cases, Holsters & Straps

Protective and ergonomic accessories reduce drops and improve all-day usability.
