Zebra Industrial Label Printer Questions

Choosing between the ZT ranges, wear parts and media capacity.

Which Zebra industrial label printer should I choose?

The ZT200 series covers lighter industrial duty and is the usual replacement for an ageing desktop unit that has outgrown its role. The ZT400 series is the workhorse for continuous production, and the ZT600 series handles the heaviest duty and widest media.

Decide on resolution at the same time. 203 dpi suits standard barcodes and shipping labels; 300 dpi is for small, dense codes and fine text.

If the printer is idle between orders, a desktop model will do the job for considerably less.

Do I actually need an industrial printer?

Often not. Desktop printers handle steady daily printing, and they cost a fraction of an industrial unit.

Industrial earns its price in three situations: the printer runs through a full shift without pause, it sits in dust, heat or vibration, or a stoppage halts the line. In those cases the metal construction and larger media capacity mean fewer interruptions.

Compare against the desktop range before committing.

What wears out on an industrial printer?

The printhead and the platen roller. Both are consumables on a heavily used machine rather than faults, and budgeting for printhead replacement is part of running a printer at full duty.

Resolution affects the cost, since a 300 dpi printhead is more expensive to replace than a 203 dpi one. Poor quality media and running darkness higher than necessary both shorten printhead life.

What media capacity do industrial printers take?

Industrial models take a 3-inch core with an 8-inch outside diameter, holding far more labels per roll than a desktop unit. Fewer media changes per shift is one of the main reasons to buy industrial.

Exact maximums vary across the ZT ranges, so confirm against the model you are ordering rather than assuming they match.

Shop labels and ribbons, and see the polyester range for durable applications.
