Ruggedness is three published figures — drop, tumble and IP — and none of them can be added after purchase. Specify cold storage variants at order if any part of the workflow enters a freezer, since standard sealing does not handle condensation.
What makes a mobile computer rugged?
Three published figures: drop rating in metres onto concrete, tumble rating for repeated knocks, and an IP rating for dust and water. Beyond that, rugged devices use toughened glass, sealed ports and internal shock mounting. A consumer phone in a rubber case is not equivalent, because sealing and internal mounting cannot be added afterwards. Match the rating to how the device is genuinely treated, not to the best case.
Do rugged mobile computers work in freezers?
Only the freezer-rated configurations. Standard devices have a minimum operating temperature, and below it batteries lose capacity rapidly and screens respond slowly. Freezer models add heated windows and displays to prevent condensation fogging, plus low-temperature batteries. The larger problem is condensation forming when a device moves from freezer to warm areas, which standard sealing does not handle. Specify the cold storage variant at purchase.
Why are rugged mobile computers so much more expensive than phones?
You are buying survival, a dedicated scan engine, hot-swappable batteries and years of OS support, none of which a consumer phone provides. The cost comparison that matters is total cost over the deployment life: a phone replaced annually plus lost productivity from failures usually exceeds a rugged device kept five years. In a clean office the rugged premium is wasted; in a warehouse it pays back quickly.
How are fleets of rugged devices managed?
Through enterprise mobility management, which pushes applications, settings and security policies to devices remotely and locks them to their intended use. That matters as soon as you have more than a handful, since visiting each device to update an app does not scale. Most manufacturers provide their own tooling alongside third-party options. Ask about staging, which lets new devices configure themselves on first boot rather than being set up by hand.

Not sure which model is right?
Send us what you are trying to do and we will come back with a specific recommendation rather than a catalogue. If you are replacing equipment, a model number or a photo of the existing setup is usually enough to work from.
