Companion Scanners

A companion scanner is a pocket-sized cordless scanner, small enough to clip to a lanyard or slip into an apron, that pairs over Bluetooth to a phone, tablet or mobile computer. It suits staff who scan intermittently while doing other work — shop floor stock checks, click-and-collect picking, table-side ordering and events. It is not a replacement for a full handheld in a high-volume scanning role.

When the scanner is carried all day but used occasionally. Weight and pocketability matter more than decode speed in that role, and a full handheld on a hip holster becomes a nuisance. If someone scans hundreds of items in a session, a handheld or pistol grip is faster and less tiring. Companion scanners also generally have shorter read range, so they suit arm's-length scanning rather than aisle work.

Over Bluetooth, usually in keyboard mode so scanned data appears wherever the cursor is. A common annoyance is the on-screen keyboard disappearing while a scanner is paired in that mode, which matters if staff also type. Many models include a toggle for this behaviour. Confirm your app lists the scanner as supported, since mobile platforms often certify specific models rather than accepting any Bluetooth device.

Most cover a full shift of intermittent scanning, since the small battery is matched to light duty. Charging is typically over USB or a small cradle rather than the substantial base a full handheld uses, which is part of the appeal. Because they are small and pocketable, the practical risk is misplacement rather than flat batteries, so a designated charging point per person is worth setting up.
