Citizen Receipt Printer Questions

Choosing between the models, and the details fixed at order time.

Which Citizen receipt printer should I choose?

Start with where it sits. Open counter with space above takes a top-exit model such as the CT-E301, CT-E601 or CT-S801III. Under a counter or inside a cabinet needs front exit: CT-E351, CT-E651 or CT-S851III.

Then match the volume. The CT-S310II is the value choice for a steady counter. The CT-E601 at 350 mm/sec suits busier sites. The CT-S801III and CT-S851III reach 500 mm/sec with an LCD display for high-volume checkout.

For wide receipts, tickets or order documents, the CT-S4000 and CT-S4500 print at four-inch width.

How fast are Citizen receipt printers?

The current high-performance models reach 500 mm/sec, which is at the top of what POS printing needs and comfortably ahead of much of the market. The CT-S801III and CT-S851III both run at that speed.

Mid-range models sit lower and are still quick enough for most counters: the CT-E601 reaches 350 mm/sec, the CT-E651 300 mm/sec and the CT-E351 250 mm/sec.

In practice, speed stops being the limiting factor above roughly 250 mm/sec for a standard receipt. Above that, the cutter and paper handling matter more than the raw print rate.

What paper do Citizen receipt printers use?

80mm thermal receipt paper on standard counter models, which is the industry standard and what most POS software expects. The CT-S310II also accepts 58mm, useful for compact installs or mixed estates.

No ribbon is needed on thermal printers. The paper is the only consumable, so keep enough rolls to cover a busy week.

Which interface do I need?

USB is the default and works with almost any POS. Ethernet suits shared printers and multi-till sites. Bluetooth suits tablet-based POS, and serial appears on older or specialised installations.

The interface is fixed at manufacture and cannot be changed later, so it is the single most important thing to get right at order time. Send us your POS software and we will confirm the exact part number.

Will a Citizen printer open my cash drawer?

Yes. Citizen receipt printers include a drawer kick port, so the drawer opens through the printer when a sale completes.

The cable matters more than the printer. RJ11 and RJ12 connectors look identical across brands but pin wiring differs, so order the cable matched to Citizen rather than reusing one from another printer. It is the most common avoidable support call at install.

Can I use a Citizen thermal printer in a kitchen?

Not for the hot line. Thermal paper darkens with heat and degrades with grease, so a ticket above a grill can be unreadable within minutes. Use an impact printer there instead.

Citizen thermal printers are the right choice for the front counter, the pass, bar service and anywhere away from direct heat. Many sites run Citizen thermal at the counter and an impact printer in the kitchen.

Are Citizen printers quiet enough for a ward or a quiet counter?

Yes, and it is one of the range's genuine strengths. The CT series is noticeably quieter than most alternatives, which is why they turn up in healthcare, libraries, pharmacies and hospitality where a loud cutter is intrusive.

If noise matters, mention it when you order and we will point you at the quietest model for the throughput you need.
