Citizen Mobile Printer Questions

Choosing between the CMP models, and getting the pairing and command language right.

Which Citizen mobile printer should I choose?

Start with what you are printing. The CMP-20II is a mobile receipt printer for on-the-spot receipts and dockets. The CMP-30II is the mobile label printer, and the CMP-25L prints labels with Wi-Fi and ZPL support.

Then check how it connects. The CMP-20II and CMP-30II are available with Bluetooth alongside serial and USB, which suits a phone or tablet in the field. The CMP-25L uses USB and Wi-Fi, which suits a site with its own network rather than a roaming user.

Will it work with an iPhone or iPad?

Yes, on the models specified for it. The CMP-20II and CMP-30II are stocked in configurations listing standard and iOS Bluetooth, which is what allows a direct pairing with Apple devices.

Not every Bluetooth variant carries the iOS pairing, and it is fixed in the unit you buy. If the printer is going to be driven from an iPhone or iPad, say so when you order and we will make sure the part number is the right one.

What is the difference between the CMP-20II and the CMP-30II?

The CMP-20II is the smaller unit and is aimed at receipts. The CMP-30II is the label-capable model and is the one to choose if you are printing anything adhesive, such as shelf-edge labels, price marking or field asset tags.

Both are stocked with serial, USB and Bluetooth including the iOS variant, and both support ESC/POS and CPCL. If the job is purely receipts, the CMP-20II is the lighter and cheaper answer.

Which command language do they use?

The CMP-20II and CMP-30II support ESC/POS and CPCL. The CMP-25L supports ZPL, which matters if your existing workflow was written for a Zebra printer and you would rather not rewrite the label templates.

Getting this right is what determines whether the printer drops into your software or needs development work. Tell us what is generating the labels and we will confirm which model fits.

Are they rugged enough for field or warehouse use?

The CMP range is built for mobile work rather than desk use, and is designed to be carried on a belt or shoulder strap through a working day.

Ratings for drop resistance and dust or water ingress vary by model, so check the specification for the environment you have in mind rather than assuming the range is uniform. If the printer is going somewhere genuinely harsh, tell us the conditions and we will confirm what the model is rated to.

What media do they take?

Mobile printers take narrow rolls sized to the unit, so media is not interchangeable with your counter or desktop printers. Order the roll specified for the model rather than assuming a standard size will fit.

All the CMP models are direct thermal, so there is no ribbon to hold. The paper or label roll is the only consumable, which is part of why they are practical to run in the field.
