Common Questions

Bluetooth Barcode Scanner Questions, Answered

Cordless scanning is about range behaviour and pairing mode more than headline distance. Confirm which pairing profile your software expects, since the scanner supports several but only one will work with your platform.

How far from the base can a Bluetooth barcode scanner work?

Manufacturers quote line-of-sight figures that real buildings rarely deliver. Racking, walls, metal shelving and fridges all cut range substantially, so treat published distances as a ceiling rather than a working figure. What matters more is behaviour at the edge of range: good scanners store scans in batch memory and upload them on reconnection, so a walk out of range does not lose data. Ask about batch memory before assuming range alone.

How do Bluetooth scanners pair with a computer or tablet?

Most pair either as a keyboard (HID) or a serial port profile (SPP), and the mode is set by scanning a configuration barcode from the manual. HID needs no driver and types data straight into any field, which suits most POS and inventory software. SPP is required by some applications that expect a serial data stream. Check which mode your software expects before deployment, since the scanner is capable of both but only one will work.

How long does a Bluetooth scanner battery last?

Most cordless scanners cover a full shift on a charge under normal scanning, with the cradle recharging between shifts. Heavy continuous scanning and cold storage both shorten runtime noticeably. Plan the charging cradle placement as part of the deployment, since a scanner left on a bench instead of its base is the most common cause of a flat unit at opening. Batteries are replaceable on better models.

Can several Bluetooth scanners work in the same area?

Yes. Each scanner pairs to its own base or host, and multiple pairs operate alongside each other without interfering in normal use. In dense deployments with many devices, some manufacturers offer a proprietary cordless protocol rather than standard Bluetooth, which handles congestion better than consumer-grade radio. If you are deploying more than a handful in one room, mention that when specifying, as it affects which family to choose.

Do Bluetooth scanners work with phones and tablets?

Generally yes, but check the specifics. iOS devices can be fussier about pairing profiles, and some scanners suppress the on-screen keyboard when paired in HID mode, which is either helpful or infuriating depending on your workflow. Many scanners include a toggle for that behaviour. Confirm your app lists the scanner as supported, since mobile POS platforms often certify a short list rather than accepting any Bluetooth device.

Is a Bluetooth scanner worth it over a corded one?

Only if people move. Corded scanners never need charging, never go missing and cost less, which is why fixed counters still use them. Cordless earns its place when staff walk to bulky goods, scan in receiving, or work an aisle away from the till. If the scanner never leaves a one metre radius of the terminal, the cable is not the problem it appears to be.
