In a tablet setup the printer becomes the hub, since the drawer connects to it rather than the tablet. Check your POS app's approved printer list and MFi certification for Apple devices before buying either piece.
Can I use a consumer tablet for point of sale?
Many businesses do, and for mobile or low-volume selling it works well. The tradeoffs are that consumer tablets are not built for continuous daily use, have no ports for receipt printers or cash drawers, and are replaced on short cycles so the same model may be unavailable in a year. Commercial tablets cost more but offer longer availability, better mounting options and sometimes built-in scanning. Confirm your POS app supports the device and OS version.
How do tablets connect to receipt printers and cash drawers?
Usually not directly. The printer connects over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and the cash drawer connects to the printer rather than the tablet. That makes the printer the hub of a tablet setup, and it is why printer choice matters more here than in a Windows deployment. For Apple devices the printer must be MFi certified to pair over Bluetooth. Check your POS app's approved printer list before buying either.
What mounting options exist for POS tablets?
Common options are a counter stand that swivels for customer signature, a secure locking enclosure, a VESA arm, and vehicle or wall mounts. Security matters if the tablet is customer-facing and unattended, since an unsecured tablet is easily walked away with. Swivel stands are worth the extra where customers sign or tip on screen. Plan charging into the mount, because a tablet that cannot charge in place will not last a shift.
When do I need a rugged tablet?
When it leaves the counter. Field service, delivery, warehouse, construction and outdoor use all justify drop ratings and IP sealing that a consumer tablet does not have. Rugged tablets also offer daylight-readable screens, glove-capable touch and hot-swappable batteries, none of which consumer devices provide. Indoors on a fixed counter, a commercial tablet in a protective enclosure is usually sufficient and considerably cheaper.
