Drycleaning Hardware Questions, Answered

The questions that come up most before a drycleaning counter gets fitted out. The one that matters most: garment tags need an impact printer, not a thermal one, because thermal tags go black in the plant. If your question is not here, send it over and we will answer it directly.

Why can't I use a thermal printer for garment tags?
Thermal printing works by burning heat-sensitive paper. Put that tag through cleaning, pressing or a steam tunnel and the whole thing darkens until the barcode is unreadable. Impact printers strike an ink ribbon onto the tag instead, so the mark is physical and survives the process. That is why every tag printer here is impact rather than thermal. Thermal is still the right choice for the customer receipt at the counter. Just not for anything that goes into the plant.
How does the cash drawer open?
Through the receipt printer, not the tablet or the PC. The drawer plugs into an RJ11 port on the back of the printer, and the printer sends the pulse that releases the latch when a cash sale completes. This catches people out more than anything else on this page. If there is no receipt printer, or the printer has no drawer port, the drawer will not open on its own. A few drawers offer a direct USB connection that bypasses the printer, which is the answer for a tablet-only counter.
Do I need a legal-for-trade scale?
If you charge by weight, yes. Pricing a customer on a reading from a scale that is not certified for trade use is a compliance problem in most states, and it is the kind of thing that only surfaces during an inspection. Legal-for-trade scales carry an NTEP certificate and are built to hold their calibration through repeated commercial use. The Mettler Toledo BC series here is the usual choice for wash-dry-fold. If you weigh only for your own estimating and charge a flat rate, a standard bench scale is fine.
Will this hardware work with my drycleaning software?
In almost every case, yes. The printers, scanners, drawers and scales here use standard drivers rather than anything proprietary, so they are not locked to one platform. The practical questions are the connection type and the device you run the software on. A USB printer needs a machine with a USB port. A tablet-only setup needs Bluetooth or network hardware instead. Tell us which software and which device you run and we will confirm the exact model before you order.
Can one printer serve more than one counter?
Yes, if it is an Ethernet or WiFi model. Network printers accept jobs from any device on the same network, so a second terminal or a back-office PC can send to the same unit. USB and Bluetooth printers are one device at a time. If a second station is likely within a year, buying Ethernet now costs a little more and saves replacing the printer later. This applies to tag printers as much as receipt printers.
What does a full counter cost to fit out?
A complete bundle covers the terminal, receipt printer, tag printer, scanner and cash drawer, and works out lower than buying the same items separately. Add a scale if you run wash-dry-fold by weight. Volume pricing applies from five units, and multi-location rollouts are quoted individually.
