This is one of the most important distinctions when selecting labels.

Direct Thermal

Direct thermal printing creates an image by heating specially coated label material. No thermal-transfer ribbon is required.

Label Compatibility Checklist

1. Confirm the exact printer model
Printer families often contain multiple direct thermal, thermal transfer, resolution and media-handling configurations. Record the exact manufacturer and printer model before purchasing media.
2. Measure label width and height
Label sizes are normally written width × height. Also confirm backing width when required. A 4" × 6" shipping label is four inches wide and six inches long in the print direction.
3. Check core size and roll outside diameter
Labels with identical face dimensions can be supplied on very different rolls. Desktop, industrial and mobile printers commonly use different roll diameters, core dimensions and media configurations.
4. Confirm gap, black-mark or continuous sensing
The printer must be able to identify where one label ends and the next begins. Common sensing methods include gaps, black marks, notches and continuous media.
5. Match the adhesive to the surface
Cardboard, glass, metal, polyethylene, polypropylene, textured containers, frozen products and reusable totes can require different adhesive properties.
6. Match label material to required life
A shipping label may only need to remain readable through delivery. An asset or compliance label may need to remain readable for years. Required lifespan can strongly influence material and print-method selection.
7. Thermal transfer users must also match the ribbon
Confirm ribbon formulation, width, length, core, winding direction and printer compatibility. Wax, wax/resin and resin ribbons are not interchangeable in every application.
8. Test before buying large quantities
Test printing, barcode scanning, adhesion and expected environmental exposure with the actual printer and application before committing to a large supply order.

How do I find labels for my printer?

Can I buy labels based only on size?
No. Two label rolls can both contain the same size labels but use different core sizes, roll diameters, sensing methods, materials or winding configurations. Confirm the complete media specification before ordering.
What is the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer labels?
Direct thermal labels create the printed image when heat activates the label coating and normally do not require a ribbon. Thermal transfer printers use a ribbon to transfer the image to the label.
How can I tell whether my printer uses a ribbon?
If a thermal-transfer ribbon is installed between the printhead and label, the printer is using thermal transfer. Direct thermal printing uses heat-sensitive media without a thermal-transfer ribbon. Some printer families are available in both configurations, so verify the exact model.
What size shipping label do I need?
4" × 6" is a common format for parcel and ecommerce shipping labels, but the required size depends on your carrier, shipping software, printer and label template.
Why won't my new label roll fit my printer?
The label dimensions may be correct while the roll outside diameter or core size is not. Desktop, industrial and mobile printers frequently use different roll formats.
Which ribbon should I use?
The correct ribbon depends on the printer, label coating and durability requirements. Wax is commonly paired with thermal-transfer paper. Wax/resin provides greater resistance for compatible materials, while resin is often used with compatible synthetic labels for more demanding applications.
Can labels from one printer brand work in another printer brand?
Sometimes. Compatibility depends on media dimensions, core size, roll diameter, print technology, sensing method, winding and other printer specifications. Never assume compatibility based only on the brand printed on the label box.
What if I already know the label part number?
