If you sell goods by weight, the scale must be certified and verified for commercial transactions in your jurisdiction, and using an uncertified scale to price goods is generally not permitted. Certification covers the scale design, and there is usually a separate verification and periodic re-verification of the installed unit. Requirements vary by country and region, so confirm the specific obligations that apply to you before ordering, as this affects which models are eligible.

Retail scales connect by USB or serial and send the weight directly to the POS software, which then applies the price per unit. Not all POS platforms support scale integration, and those that do usually certify specific models and protocols. Confirm your software lists the scale before ordering, because a scale that cannot talk to your POS means staff keying weights manually, which defeats the purpose and introduces errors.

Bench and counter scales sit on the counter for weighing produce and loose goods. Scanner-scales combine weighing with an in-counter barcode scanner in one bay, which is the grocery standard. Label-printing scales weigh, price and print a barcode label in one step, used in delis and butchers. Choose by workflow: if the customer is served over a counter, a label-printing scale usually saves the most time.

Capacity is the maximum weight, and accuracy is the smallest increment it can display, which is what matters when selling small quantities. A scale with high capacity often has coarser increments, so a produce scale and a shipping scale are not interchangeable. Work out the lightest item you sell by weight and check the increment supports pricing it fairly, then confirm the capacity covers your heaviest.
