Mobile Receipt Printers

Anywhere the transaction happens away from a counter: market stalls, delivery and route sales, queue busting in retail, table-side ordering, field service and events. They are carried on a belt or shoulder strap and print over Bluetooth from a phone, tablet or mobile computer. The trade against a countertop printer is smaller paper rolls and slower print, in exchange for not needing a fixed station at all.

Some do and some do not, and this is where most buying mistakes happen. Apple devices require the printer to be MFi certified for Bluetooth pairing, and printers without that certification simply will not connect regardless of specification. Android is generally more permissive. Check both the certification and your POS platform's approved device list, since cloud POS apps typically support a short list of specific models rather than any Bluetooth printer.

58mm is the common mobile width, with some larger units taking 80mm. The roll diameter is small so operators reload more frequently than at a counter. If you run both counter and mobile printers, note that 58mm receipts fit fewer characters per line, so your receipt template may need a separate layout configured in the POS software rather than reusing the 80mm one.

A full shift of intermittent receipt printing is typical, though heavy use and cold conditions reduce it. For all-day events or multi-shift routes, plan spare batteries or in-vehicle charging rather than relying on a single charge. Batteries lose capacity over time, so declining runtime after a couple of years is expected wear rather than a fault, and replacement packs should be budgeted.

Better ones are. Look for a stated drop rating and an IP rating for dust and water, particularly if the printer is used outdoors, on delivery routes or at markets. Lighter retail-focused models trade ruggedness for weight, which matters when a printer is worn for eight hours. Protective cases and shoulder straps are worth ordering with the printer rather than after the first drop.

For low volume or genuinely mobile selling, yes. For a fixed counter it is a poor trade: mobile printers print more slowly, hold far less paper and depend on a battery that a mains-powered counter printer does not. They also cannot drive a cash drawer in most cases, which matters if you take cash. Use mobile printers where the mobility is the point, not as a cheaper counter printer.
